Villa San Michele — Florence, Italy

A 15th-century Franciscan monastery has now been transformed into one of Europe's most charming and picturesque hotels. Only a few minutes from the center of Florence, Villa San Michele is an oasis of peace and unsurpassed beauty, surrounded by its own gardens and woodland on the Fiesole hills. The present aspect of the building, with its facade attributed to Michelangelo and the imposing lateral Loggia looking towards Florence, dates from the year 1600, when the monastery was enlarged and completely renovated at the expense of Giovanni di Bartolomeo Davanzati. In the 1980's, Orient-Express embarked upon a comprehensive restoration of the buildings, this time with the assistance of the Florence Fine Arts Authority. Over the past decade great care and expertise has been engaged to refurbish the entire Villa in a style that provides a luxurious environment while simultaneously maintaining the beauty and heritage of this magnificent building. There are 45 Guest rooms, most with windows which enjoy views over the Italian garden, the private woodland and hills of Fiesole. The Junior Suites with private garden and terrace, the Chapel, the "Orangerie" Limonaia Suites and all rooms located above the Loggia enjoy views over the town of Florence and the Arno valley. But the real asset of the Villa San Michele is its service: the dedicated team has created a reputation for which they are very proud. Most of these professionals have been working at the Villa San Michele for many years, creating a unique continuity of service, care and attention to the hotel's 'family' of guests who regularly return to stay. With its idyllic surroundings, delicious Tuscan dining, and spectacular location, The Villa San Michele attracts the most discerning clientele, boasting an incredible list of celebrities that have selected it for a relaxing vacation.
